DISTRICT 9

COMMITTEE MEETING

June 15, 2010

 

            The District 9 Committee held the June 15, 2010 meeting at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jim Manners. The following members were present: Ed Babcock, Randy Cathcart, Roger Collins, Tony Flint, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Aaron Straub, Bob Tonkin, Susan Valentine, Tim Walter, and Bob Wicker.

            A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the minutes of the April 2010 meeting.  The motion carried.

FINANCE:

            A motion was made by Ed Babcock and seconded by Randy Cathcart to accept the treasurer’s reports.  The motion carried.

            Accounts payable were reviewed.

            Financial reports from the baseball, softball, tennis, track and field, and boys’ volleyball tournaments were presented.  A financial summary of the annual banquet was presented.

            The swimming and diving financial report will be reviewed in August.

            An update concerning the statewide audit was given. 

            Discussion was held concerning combining “AA” and “AAA” track and field meets.  The financial loss is a growing concern.  Further discussion will be held.

COMMUNICATIONS:

            A letter was received from the Clarion Borough questioning why there was no rental fee paid using the community softball field for a district event.

            Senate Bill 890 was discussed.  The bill would require schools to report male and female athletic opportunities afforded their students.

CHAIRMAN’S UPDATE:

            The chairman’s update has been e-mailed to District 9 principals.

            There is a football announcers clinic to be held in the Pittsburgh area.  For information check the PIAA website.

            Schools can create their own amended form and attach to the original CIPPI Form.

            Although football sleds and blocking pads are legal, physical contact is still not permitted. 

ADMINISTRATIVE:

            The District 9 Golf Steering Committee will meet prior to the August district meeting to discus the presentation made by the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference.

            The Budget Committee will meet prior to the August district committee meeting to form a policy dealing with the cost of school facilities. If a school has a home contest, the committee will look at the costs charged to the district committee by the “home” school.

            In recent years, attendance at state and district contests has been decreasing.

            There will be a special PIAA Basketball Steering Committee meeting to discuss a possible East-West alignment and public versus non-public school classifications in basketball.

ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES:

            The Audit Committee will meet on July 20, 2010 at 9:00AM at Aiello’s Café.

            A report on the number of officials used during various district tournament contests and the role of the evaluators will be presented by the officials’ representatives.

            A motion was made by Randy Cathcart and seconded by Tim Walter to approve Bud Brennen as the Sportsmanship chairman.  The motion carried.          

            Attempts will be made to encourage District 9 schools to update their information on the District 9 website. 

SPORTS SPECIFIC COMMITTEES:

GOLF:                       

            The dates and locations for the 2010 district tournaments are September 27 and October 2 at Pinecrest Country Club for the boys’ tournament and October 4, 2010 at Bavarian Hills County Club for the girls’ tournament.

            The district golf committee will meet prior to the August district committee meeting.

TENNIS:

            The tennis chairman is looking at various indoor sites for inter-district tennis matches.  Possible indoor sites are located in State College, Altoona, Ebensburg, and Clarion.

BASKETBALL:

            The district basketball committee will meet prior to the August district meeting to discuss playing all quarter final sites be played on neutral sites.

SWIMMING AND DIVING:

            At the August meeting, the regional District 6 and 9 swimming and diving report will be reviewed.

VOLLEYBALL:

            The PIAA Boys’ Volleyball champion was State College Area High School from the Districts 6, 9, an 10 Regional Tournament.

 

            THE NEXT DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE ON AUGUST 4, 2010 AT A TIME AND SITE TO BE DETERMINED.

           

            Principals: please submit any agenda items to either Jim Manners or Bob Tonkin.

 

            A motion was made by Randy Cathcart and seconded by Ed Babcock to adjourn.  The motion carried.
