PUNXSUTAWNEY – Punxsutawney won the District 9 boys’ golf team title with a score of 328 on Monday at the Punxsutawney Country Club.
In addition, eight golfers qualified for Saturday’s second round of the individual tournament.
NOTE FROM DISTRICT 9 GOLF CHAIRMAN KEVIN DOVERSPIKE
I must give special recognition to Tim Carrico and all the KSAC coaches for providing hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and cookies as well as several of the Punxsutawney Country Club Members who volunteered their time to shuttle
carts, forecaddie holes and donate money to feed the golfers, coaches and all spectators in attendance. Each golfer was provided a bagged lunch prior to the competition, compliments of the aforementioned PCC Members as well as
numerous coolers full of soda, Gatorade and water that were stationed throughout the front and back nine. Then, during the round, every golfer, coach, and any spectator was treated to a barbeque of hamburgers and hot dogs grilled by Tim Carrico and Wes Tosh (RV). To top it all off, after the round, everyone in attendance to include spectators was afforded a meal consisting of pizza, pulled pork sandwiches (made from pork roasts that were
smoked on site throughout the course of the tournament), mac and cheese, salad, baked beans, pasta salad, cup cakes and cookies and a cake that was themed out like a golf course.
I’ve been the golf chairman for 11 years and I’ve never experienced anything like this. How many high school sporting events has anyone ever been to where all the student athletes, coaching as well as any spectator in attendance are provided with unlimited food to eat throughout the event? All at the expense of some very good-hearted, well-meaning people. Even though the round took nearly 6 hours, the atmosphere was as festive as I’ve seen.
